Watrous was a member of Company E, 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the U. S. Civil War. During the Spanish American War, Watrous served as a high ranking U. S. Army military officer. Watrous also served as a political figure in the Milwaukee community, becoming a Republican state assemblyman
