Photography by Lindley Eddy. Seqouyah was a man known for his introduction of syllabary making reading and writing possible for the Cherokee. He was the only member of a non literate people who independently created a writing system. He was such an inspiration to those using his writing system, that the Sequoia tree is thought to be named after
